Buying your Very First Golf Clubs: What You Need to Know

Buying your First Clubs

This is going to be the trickiest stage of buying clubs, as there are more variables now than there will be in the future when your swing has settled and more consistent.

What’s important at this stage.

The length and weight of the clubs are the most important consideration.  If the clubs are too short, too long, too heavy or too light, its going to make it more difficult striking the ball well.

Secondly, the club head design.  We want something that is going to be ‘forgiving’ for off centre hits, help you hit the ball further and higher.

And thirdly, and possibly most importantly… at what COST.  For those in a position to do so, buying custom clubs is ABSOLUTELY the best option, and they cost NO MORE than buying new clubs from the shelf at the shop.  Of course, this comes with a caveat… you can only buy custom clubs that are BRAND NEW.

The alternative, is to find out what spec your clubs should be, and source them second hand.  Its perhaps a more sensible option, as, if your progress with your golf game over the first year or so, your swing may start to suit a different type of club, and so it offers you more flexibility financially to then make the bigger commitment after a year or two of playing and progressing,

Most importantly of course, seek professional advice.  Be Warned; That doesn’t necessarily mean going to any golf store where ‘store assistants’ will provide you with a ‘custom fitting’.  In my experience, I have had many players coming to see more for coaching AFTER they have visited such stores, only to be investing in clubs that are unsuitable and at a high price.

Seek out your local Golf Professionals, Custom Club Fitters, and let the experts guide you to the best decision for you, your game, and your bank account.
