Equipment Checks & MOTs

How easy is it to establish if someone is playing the right clubs?
Coach Richie explains the process we use to assess a player’s current set-up.
It starts with what’s already in the bag — for example, taking a look at a seven iron: the shaft, the length of the club, and how that relates to the player’s height. From there, we watch the player hit shots and gather a few key pieces of information like ball speed, lie angle, and strike.
With that, it becomes clear whether the clubs are working well for the player or whether there’s a mismatch in areas like shaft stiffness, club length, or lie angle. The same straightforward approach applies to the driver.
Taking a closer look at the clubs that make up a players bag set up will help to verify any gaps or missing opportunities as well.  Perhaps it sits at the top end of the bag, the links from driver to fairway woods, then how the fairway woods blend into hybrids or long irons.
At the bottom end of the bag, how does the pitching wedge loft then affect the next wedge in your bag?  Should it be a gap wedge, but which loft?  50?  52?  And this then of course affects the choice of sand wedge and lob wedge.. not to mention what grinds/bounces are played in these wedges.
